how to draw a network topology?
so i have 3 floors with loads of nodes (pcs/switches/server rooms/routers) that i need to draw a topology for so it would make it easier for the IT department to troubleshoot any networking problem.
how can i do so! is there a software that would help me do such a thing! and how!
i got an advice to use something in excel tht when i update the excel sheet it immediatly updates the visio presentation but i havent got a clue how to do so hence why im posting my question here..
any help would be appreciated..
If you have the budget, Microsoft’s Visio is a good start for this endeavor and even has a network discovery crawl ability that may or may not be overkill for what you’re doing. You can also get, for instance, Cisco product icons of their routers/switches/etc. that you can use with Visio (see source links).
This is what I have been using for our multi-building, multi-level, campus network for about 6 years now and it has suited our needs well and has always impressed our outsourced contractors when needed for a project.
As far as I know, Visio uses MSSQL to save discovered network data to, though there are many facets to the program (no doubt the ability to export Visio’s asset management information out to Excel for other types of asset management.)
For me, I started out w/ notes and documented each closet/floor/building and worked out from our central nexus. It’s a lot of work, especially if you want to accurately represent the ports and switch types you’re connected to, as well as physical links therein and as well commenting, etc., and if you are looking for that level of detail, you may be back to doing this by hand, unless Visio has come some ways since the early 2003 version I have.
