What ever happened to non widescreen computers?!?
Seriously… and by computers i mean laptops… what is the best place to get one? is the only option used or refurbished right? also what is the last year that non widescreens were in production bc i will definitely be wanting to get one from that year. also is there a name for “non-widescreen” to put into the amazon search box? its so hard to find a non widescreen computer! *sigh*… why did they ever go away? … any suggestions would greatly appreciated. thanks.
Why the hostility against widescreens? I understand that you dislike them. Widescreens began to overtake standard 4:3 monitors probably around 2005 (don’t quote me on that. It’s a guess). There were several reasons. First, TV screens were moving largely to widescreen, which meant greater popularity for widescreen movies, and thus, people wanted their laptops to have a similarly configured screen to work on. Additionally, the wider space is more natural to work on, according to some researchers. The bottom lines of manufacturers were also helped (doesn’t it always come around to profits) because widescreens yield a bigger “size” (15.4″, etc) for less square inches, which means customers think they’re getting more than they really are.
I personally have grown to like my widescreen monitors, but I understand your dislike. If you want a 4:3 monitor, I would suggest looking at some small business computers. Dell’s Latitude lineup features a number of computers that use 4:3 monitors. However, these computers, being aimed at business, may not be exactly what you’re looking for when it comes to performance.
