Do we have to make a choice between laptop and desktop computers?

For various reasons, people may prefer to buy a laptop or a desktop computer. This may be based on several factors which include portability, efficiency, performance, price, versatility, and flexibility, among others. Laptop computers may be better than desktop computers in some aspects, while this may not be so in others. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages over the other and that is why most people own both a laptop and a desktop computer.

What gives the laptops an edge and advantage over all other types of computers is their portability. They are smaller in size compared to desktops and you can take with them everywhere you go. What you need is the necessary carrying mates that include a bag and the battery and maybe a wireless device like a modem broadband; and you will be able browse anywhere. Desktops, on the other hand, are large in size and will need a table to be placed as well as to operate on. The monitor itself is the size of a television and the CPU may weigh a couple of pounds and must be used at the place where it is mounted.

Secondly, laptops have rechargeable batteries which enable you to use them for some time in case of a power interruption and there is lower risk of losing data in such a sudden power interruption. Most desktops, on the other hand, do not have batteries and rely on a direct power supply and, if power is suddenly lost, you lose all the unsaved data.

Third, laptops come in a variety of colors ranging from pink to green, black, white, green, yellow, etc. The pink brands have grown in popularity and manufacturers have reported increasing sales of their pink laptops. Desktops are available in black or the cream / white and as such they do not offer a wide variety of colors to choose from. These are the major advantages of the laptops over desktops.

There are also some advantages of desktops over laptops and that is why they (the desktops) are still popular today.

First, desktops have better and bigger computer components, their cooling system is better and they can perform better and for a longer duration than laptops. Most laptops become physically hot when they work for long periods and may need to be switched off to enable them cool down. The desktops are ideal for use in places where there is a big work load, because they can work continuously for several hours.

Second, desktops can resist the effects of viruses and other malware and do not easily crash as a result of their infection. Laptops, on the other hand, can crash totally within several hours or days of exposure to viruses and other malware. Most businesses which offer internet browsing services prefer desktops because of this feature.

In an attempt to incorporate the good features of the desktops as well as those of laptops, the manufacturers have designed the all-in-one computers which incorporate the high performance of desktops and are portable, but not as much as the laptops.
